  • Absorption of Heat:Heat pumps operate by absorbing heat from a low-temperature area (e.g., outdoor air or the ground) and releasing it to a high-temperature area (e.g., indoors during the winter, or outdoors during the summer).

 

  • Evaporation and Compression: They use a refrigerant that evaporates at low temperatures and condenses to release heat at higher temperatures. As the refrigerant evaporates, it absorbs heat from the surrounding area. It is then compressed, which increases its temperature.

 

  • Heat Exchange: The heated refrigerant is then passed through a heat exchanger, where it transfers its heat to the air or water that will be circulated to provide heating or cooling.

    For heating, the heat pump takes heat from the outside air, the ground, or water, and pumps it indoors. For cooling, the process is reversed, with the heat pump removing heat from indoors and discharging it outside.

 

  • Indoor Distribution: For heating, the warm air is distributed within the building using a forced-air or radiant heating system. For cooling, the warm air indoors is replaced with cooler air.

    The ability to reverse the direction of heat flow is what makes heat pumps versatile, serving both heating and cooling needs.

 

It’s important to note that while the heat pump moves heat rather than generating it, it requires electricity to power the system, which is used for the compressor and fans. Overall, heat pumps are known for their energy efficiency, especially in moderate climates, and their ability to provide both heating and cooling functions with a single system.
